Anybody out there who is good at math? Fuel tank size?
« on: August 06, 2019, 08:56:23 AM »
Anybody want to check my math on my fuel tank?

I figure 310 square inches per inch of tank or 3720 square inches per foot.

231 square inches in a gallon

3720 divided by 231 gives you approximately 16 gallons per foot.

16 x 8feet gives you 128 gallons of fuel.

Thanks for checking my math

10 x 31 x 96 = 29760 in^3  x 1USGal/231 in^3 =  128.8 USGal.

9.5 x 30.5 x 94 = 27236.5 in^3 x 1USGal/231 in^3 x 90% =  106.1 USGal.

Thanks Jim. What is your thought on showing the 90% math. Is there something I am missing?

I think there is usually some amount of volume in the tank that's out of reach of the downspout, since it can't technically go all the way flush with the bottom.

The second calculation points out how sensitive the volume is, due to changes in dimensions.

Your sketch doesn't indicate if the dimensions given are for the inside of the tank or for the inside of the hole it's going into.
Baffles are also required, thus the 94" vs 96" dimension.
90%? Just to cause conversation  :o  The tank will never be 100% full, and there needs to be room for thermal expansion.

Djeffrey,

Not sure if you are interested or where you live but I have a spare tank,  90gal Moeller Low Perm FT9002BR.  It does not have the grade valve or vent valve, I believe it has the fuel sender.  It is brand new never used.

pm me if you are interested

I am in Olympia Wa.

I get 128.8 gallons as well.

      31x8x96 + 31x(4/2)x96

=> 31x8x96 + 31x2x96 = 23,808 cu. inches

=> 23808 x 0.004329 = 128.8 gallons
