Great Alaskan FAQ / Anchor Selection
« on: May 09, 2024, 06:18:07 AM »
From Dan Boccia:

"Regarding anchors and anchor systems, there's a book I highly recommend called "Happy Hooking - the Art of Anchoring", and S/V Panope on Youtube has done an enormous amount of rigorous real-world, detailed testing on anchors. From both of these resources and my unhappiness with a typical Bruce-style Claw, I went with a Rocna Vulcan and will never, ever, go back to a Bruce-type Claw anchor again. The Vulcan is vastly superior in every way. Regarding anchor rollers, I see little, if any, advantage to long pulpits or rollers - you want just enough to allow the anchor to clear the bow on the way up, and any more is just extraneous IMHO."

... If I didn't have to work so many hours for a living, I'd be spending time redesigning the CG spreadsheet for these boats so I could do experimental layouts for people to help them optimize where their CG is.  Teeter totter balancing act is right - just a fact with boats.

Weight on the transom is not necessarily a bad thing if you're outfitting the boat with a true live-aboard set of accommodations and all that goes with it (and anchor winch, bow thruster etc).  A little weight on the transom will help balance out the amount of weight f'w'd.

4-strokes versus long idles ... your motor oil will absorb humidity... Recommended for 4-strokes: Run the motor hot and hard at least once a day if on a multi-day trip, or do it on the way back to the dock as the last thing you do so that you put away a boat with dry motor oil in the motor.  When running hard to dehumidify the oil, it takes 20-30 minutes or so to do it.  FYI.

Contact through a PM only, or a phone number too?  I'm CC'ing onto FB and pointing people to our Kits page ... until you want otherwise?

No standing water on the deck sounds good.

I will raise my stringers what you recommend, Brian.

Great!

I did an extremely brief search at Seattle Marine ... I see a lot of Perko, some Sea Dog (same quality as Perko), but I do see some SS or chromed brass options?

https://www.seamar.com/products?pSearch=latch%20catch%20door

I took a look at Hamilton Marine and the options were about the same as Seattle Marine.  I would hazard a guess that if seamar.com doesn't have it, then there are likely no other options out there.

I looked again yesterday and don?t see any Cadillac options for a locking door set.  I guess I?m stuck with Perko

Well ... I suspect you're right.  I wonder if there are other industries, other than the marine industry, where weather-proof door sets might be available?  KInda like how some people have used windshield wiper systems that were actually for tractor windows.

When I rewrite the manual, if I ever actually get the time, I'm going to suggest that the cockpit deck be raised 1-1/2 to 2 inches where it meets the transom and 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 inches where it meets the aft pilot house bulkhead.

Pettit's been upgrading their paint selection over the years too, and have some premium formulations available... not just the good ol' EZ-Poxy

Perko sells a lot of stuff of 'adequate quality', but they aren't selling Cadillacs.  I'm happy enough with their quality and enjoy their broad spectrum of products.  For lube, there are only so many things out there ... I've had very good luck with CorrosionX products on weather-exposed locks and hinges etc - Use ReelX or GunX.  Silicon lube is nice, but needs to be refreshed more often  I like it because it's clean and dries up, leaving behind the silicon lube.

My hot blonde

Love pix like this ... family making memories!

Q) Did you make that davit for raising the raft to the roof, or did you buy that somewhere?  How happy are you with it?  Rafts can be heavy and bulky to put on the roof ...

Wow ... what a great thread so far!  Very helpful to those in the planning stages!

Yup ... those bulkheads are surprisingly heavy and hard to handle, especially if you end up putting them in and out while fitting.  It's all progress and looking great!
