General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / Trailer
« on: April 30, 2019, 08:02:02 PM »
Brian, have you ever thought about using your mad skills to chef up a trailer plan for the GA?  I think most of us that decide to build a boat own welding machines and arent afraid to use them.  I think they would sell.

When mixing the 80/20 flour/cab o sil mix.
I may have that backwards, but anyway,  is as simple as measuring the required quantity of each and adding until the proper consistency?  Sounds simple enough.

Also wondering why folks just don’t weigh out resin and hardener by scale into Container.  Is this a not good way to go?

78
So. I think there are a couple ways to go about this.
What is the simplest way to accomplish this?

It seems raising the temp framing that the stringers sit on is the simplest way.  That means your not committed to bulkhead locations if you desire different deck elevations in different parts of the boat.

I’m seeing a longer bow stem and less flare since the shelves and chines stay the same. Which will require a slight rework of the transom.

I’m thinking 4 inches btw.  I’d like to keep the wheelhouse at the prescribe height, without change in elevation from cockpit to wheelhouse. Anyone do just this?

General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / Materials for build
« on: November 12, 2018, 04:15:29 PM »
Well I started calling around today to get some prices.  Hydro tech plywood is quite a bit more expensive than last I checked.  About 800$ for the hull.  I got nowhere with the fiberglass supplier as everything I asked for they didn’t have.  I tried to go product by product til I couldn’t stand it.  Emailed a list off.  Hope someone gets back.   Anyone care to privately share a picking ticket to speed up these vendors.

Frustrating

General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / Will it fit out the door?
« on: February 15, 2018, 11:10:52 PM »
Sooo...   I have a for reals number on my door opening.  If I pour concrete with the least amount of spoils removed my door opening is at 9'-3" above finish floor.   If use 6'-4" for the deck to top of roof arch for the Newport, 10" for stringers below the deck, and 2'-1" for the the jig as shown I get exactly 9'3".

All these numbers I took out of the plans.  Sharpshooters will notice I rounded up a 1/2" twice!  If I set the  bottom of the jig 1" off the floor after the flip that sets the roof arch at 8'3" above finish floor.

Am I missing anything here?   Anyone have a known door opening that a GA was slipped under?   I was hoping to raise the sole and install a visor.  Looks like I cannot do both.  Anyone measure the top of the boat from the garage floor?

I look forward to your replies.  Todd

General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / A house for my GA
« on: January 16, 2018, 06:50:26 AM »
Any armchair structural engineers out there?  I have been feverishly prepping an old barn to house my build.  It is 20' wide and 30 feet long.  I plan to build a shed roof enclosure at the end to extend my work space.  Thus far I have leveled the building to my satisfaction.  Pored footings and am in the process of replacing wall studs and sheeting.  While all this was going on I removed the sagging wood floor.  That gave me another 1 1-2 feet or so of headroom.

Here's the question.  What is the best way to get rid of ceiling joists to make a semi cathedral ceiling.  First off I doubt I can get/afford a engineered beam for the ridge due to its length.  I have several ideas.  Easiest would be to use collar ties to make my adjusted ceiling height.  And truss them in.  Any thoughts?

im very interested in what folks have done to make their builds their own.   Cuddy, wheelhouse, cockpit.  Specifically changes in the plans as they are drawn.  I am also interested in your favorite or least favorite feature.  What you would do different if starting over.

General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / Fiberglass supplies
« on: November 05, 2017, 02:05:02 PM »
Anyone recommend a source for glass and resin supplies?  As I cruise the interweb there are several places to start my search.  Some with free shipping too.  I don't know if anything is really free!  Any suppliers with great customer service worth noting here?

Tia, Todd

General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / Photo gallery
« on: November 05, 2017, 12:03:21 PM »
It would be great to have a gallery set up to see multiple completed builds by just scrolling through.  Fishyfish has something kind of like this.  I realize there are many more tolmans afloat than GA.  I hope to shift the balance to the GA side as I expect to start building soon.

General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / Those use porta potti
« on: September 23, 2017, 04:13:52 PM »
If you are using a porta potti in your GA or any boat for that matter.  Please post model numbers with the recommendations of any.  Also would be great to have dimensions used to enclose  porta potti.
   Thanks all
