Boat Building Materials / Plywood test
« on: February 26, 2010, 05:10:28 AM »
If u cant find marine plywood or it is too expensive (in my area is around 85$ per square meter, so it is around 255$ for standard sheet, 122x244 cm) buy one sheet and test it like this (I found it on boatdesigns.net) :

1-Buy a sheet and count the number of inner plies 7 for an 1/2" and quality and thickness 1/20" mini of the outside plies (knots, discoloration, splits etc...)
1-line glues must be dark brown (phenol)
2-cut the plywood in squares of 4*4 inches and look for voids and other defects.
3-with a chisel try to separate the plies: the glue lines must be stronger than the wood itself.
4-take ten squares and boil them 1 hour. Delamination while boiling is forbidden.
5-Destroy one boiled square with a chisel trying to separate the plies: the glue lines must be stronger than the wood itself at least at 80%.
6-take 2 squares and make it dry totally in a oven at 120 celsius degrees. Delamination while drying is forbidden.
7-Destroy one dried square with a chisel trying to separate the plies: the glue lines must be stronger than the wood itself at least at 70%.
8-meantime reboil one hour more the remaining 7 squares.
9-Destroy one re-boiled square with a chisel trying to separate the plies: the glue lines must be stronger than the wood itself at least at 70%.
10-take 2 re-boiled squares and make it dry totally in a oven at 120 celsius degrees. Delamination while drying is forbidden.
11-Destroy one re-boiled and dried square with a chisel trying to separate the plies: the glue lines must be stronger than the wood itself at least at 60 to 70%.
12-Clean the kitchen and buy flowers for you wife. Don't forget to open the windows because of the smell."....

Boat Building Materials / Birch plywood
« on: February 26, 2010, 04:57:12 AM »
I found very interesting topic on some forum, there was very intense discussion about which plywood is the best for boat building, and majority of professional boat builders sad that birch is the best of all, durable, light & strong.

Also in my area I found very affordable birch plywood.

So what u think ?

Yeah, I agree with you SmokinFletch ... but today nothing have quality like products from that days, but still I am curious about that cells.

General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / Re: Hull thickness
« on: February 19, 2010, 07:05:09 AM »
To add additional strength could I made whole hull from 4 layers of 1/5" (sides 2 layers) ply and between each layer put one thin layer of kevlar. Why to construct like that, first I will made thin 1/5" complete hull and then add additional layers but kevlar will cover all parts of hull together bottom, chine, side. And will be better then vacuum bagging couse I will screw layers until epoxy cure and then remove screws.

What you think about that ?

I check temperature data in my area, it never falls below 5 C (41 F), so there is no hazard of delamination.

Bow is made of two layers couse of easier bending or there is some other reasons ?

I am done a little sketch of my ideas for now :

Is anybody tried fuel cells, they are light, but are they reliable ?

Found some here : http://www.stecasolar.com/index.php?Steca_Brennstoffzelle_en

Also I would like to shorten cabin a little bit, for that small window in the middle of two bigger ones and extend a roof in a way that will cover half of aft deck which is left open.

This boat is not a deep-V type of boat and it's light weight.  It doesn't sit deep enough in the water to allow a bow thruster, but it's hull form and weight will allow easy maneuvering at the dock anyway, so you don't need one.

As far as where to put something like a generator, the first answer is "where it is well ventilated!".  The second answer is "Give me a general layout and I will plug it into the CG analysis and will help you fine tune your boat for best trim".  I'll help any builder of a GA perform layout analysis for weight and balance so the boat's CG remains in an appropriate envelope and so that the boat trims out properly.  As you progress, ideas will change along the way, but I am happy to work with you on it... repeatedly, and especially for the heavier items (appliances, fuel storage, water storage, powering options).

Brian

Ok lets start with what I want to have on boat from heavier stuff.

400 liters of fuel, about 100 gallons split in 2 tanks

100 liters of water, about 25 gallons

100 liters aquarium for live baits, about 25 galons

2 x 115 hp evinrude e-tec 2 x 400 lbs seat back from transome 26"

1 x 15 hp evinrude e-tec 150 lbs seat back from transome 26" ( in the middle of two 115s)

honda EU 3.0i generator 66x45x54cm  61 kg so it is around  135 lbs

2 x Steca PF 166 refrigerator/ freezer 2 x 60 kg equals 270 lbs

batteries 4 x 230 Ah arround 200 kg it is around 440 lbs

I think that all from heavy stuff if I forgot some important thing please warn me.

P.S. I like very much the appearance of visor on Prince Rupert cabin but I will build cabin without it, u also sad several times that this is light boat so I dont want add height couse of wind, it will act like sail.

I was thinking a little bit about how to simplify building of G.A.

If u are willing to support my idea I will need from you to extract cross sections from CAD project of G.A. in several points (let say 26 sections for 28 footer, every foot one section, bow and aft are end points) with exact measurement.
