General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / Re: Epoxy shortage
« on: July 14, 2021, 07:57:16 AM »
Good morning,
And boy, prices have really crept up. Can anyone here give me some feedback on Raka epoxy? I have used System 3 in the past but my suppliers price has really gone up. 1,220.00/15 gallons. This will be used for the hull. Any other brand/supplier recommendations are much appreciated.

Cannon,
Thanks for the advice. I too am planning on raising the stringers. I want a little more fuel carrying capacity and fish holding. Did you raise your sides as well or just deal with less free board? I’m leery of dangerously low sides. Could make up the difference with railings.

Did you glass your stringers before or after the bottom was fitted to it? The way I understand, a stronger bond would be had by doing so. I’m not sure I could have the bottom attached and have it turned right side up within the 72 hour window.

Great job on the flip. That is a nice looking hull. Looking forward to seeing progress pictures. Helps to keep me motivated.

I’m definitely interested in seeing some handrail options. Safety, safety, safety!

Brian, thanks for the feedback. Jose mentioned that it would work in the cold and final cure once it warmed but he mentioned it being a weaker bond. I may be overly concerned but once I’m done, I plan on fishing “hard”. I’ve been in some ruff seas in my Glasply and have had some serious pounding. Although I bet it will be less severe since I will be nearly 10’ longer.

Thank both of you for the feedback. I will definitely look into the ebond. I’ve only gotten my first 15 gal of resin so far. I’m not sure how much this will factor into what brand will be best for me but I will be working in a lean-to with just heavy vinyl canvas doors so not sure how warm I will be able to get it.

Good morning GA family,
This is just a warning of the questions that are soon to be coming. After a couple of years of contemplation, I’m finally setting sail on the boat building journey. I’ve received my kit from Chuck and picked up my first round of resin and glass from Jose at fiberglass supply. I do not have much of a carpentry background so some of my questions may seem basic. There are a few of you that I’ve made personal contact with and I already appreciate your advice and support. I may be PM’ing a few more of you guys in the Washington/Oregon area. My goal is not show quality but well enough to represent the design with pride and be able to get after these fish within a year or two. Thank you in advance.

General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / Build inspiration

Anybody in the Oregon area working on their boat today or willing to show one that’s already complete? I unexpectedly had a little free time this afternoon after visiting family and was hoping I could get inspired by someone. You can text me at 206-321-2454

This is probably the wrong place for this but seems to get the most eyes. Are any of you planned nag on attending the festival this weekend? I'm scheduled to start my build in October and it would be nice to meet some of you in person. I could be there on Friday and Sunday

That is nice. Pizza size is important!!

A standard design around your current interior layout would be great. But I hear you about most people want something different. I wonder why many more would get completed "if" they had already laid out plan. I have no idea. The more I prepare for my build, the less pie in the sky ideas I have. I'm coming around more and more to just wanting to follow your design, and have it perform the way it should. (With the except of wanting to carry a freighter worth of fuel)
If the first one goes smooth, I'll get more adventurous on the second one. At least then I will have a base line from which to compare.

Those Bartenders are very nice. What size do you have in mind for that design? And how much fuel will it hold  :)

Hey Brian,
I emailed this question and then realized it may be better over here for others to benefit as well.

Although I haven't even finished my garage to house the kit to start the boat build, I have an opportunity to get glass that may not be available later. What dimensions and thickness would you recommend if I'm following your design? I may be able to get glass for free and cut to my specs so I want to take advantage of it.

Yeah, it can get skinny in a hurry. I always see a few hotdogs (really just guys that know the route) just get on plane and go!!! Speaking of that, with stern drive, while my draft be greater or less than with an outboard?
