Todd- Thanks for the reply.  No actual rating for the transom but the designer, Graham Byrnes, specs out a 90 hp for this boat.  The finished displacement should be around 3,300 lbs which fits the formula you mentioned.
Thanks for the kind words.

General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / Outboard advice
« on: March 16, 2018, 10:42:24 PM »
Hi Guys,
I am building an Outerbanks 26 which has a lot of similarities to the Great Alaskan.  The designer calls for a 90hp outboard.  This boat is not intended to travel as fast as the GA.  I am about to pull the trigger on an Outboard and would love any input.  My knowledge of modern outboards is pretty limited and I am sure most of know more than I do about this subject.
Long story short,  my choices have come down to a Suzuki 90 or either of 2 Yamahas. Yamaha has a standard 90 and a brand new 90VMAX SHO which is supposed to have more punch that the standard model.  I am leaning towards the VMAX SHO and would welcome any input.  Fuel economy, quiet and reliability are pretty important considerations for me.  I had a dealer give me a great price on the VMAX which is only a few hundred bucks more than the standard model.
Thanks in advance.

I have used the composite brads and staples and they are great.  I did the Ashcroft planking on my Outerbanks 26 with the composite staples and use the brads all of the time to hold things together while gluing, etc.  Love them.  Redhawk also makes them and they are available from Duckworks in Port Townsend.  I bought a pnuematic Redhawk staple gun which has worked pretty well.  I use my 18 gauge Makita nail gun for the composite brads and it works perfectly.  Haven't tried the heavier nails but imagine they would work fine.  Nice to drive fasteners that don't have to be removed and won't corrode.  They sand really well.

Cannon,
Clever! Can you try turning the boat over to get the photo right side up?:).

General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / Deck Scuppers
« on: November 27, 2017, 06:11:24 PM »
Hi Guys,
Ready to install deck scuppers or deck drains in my OB26.  I was planning to use the SeaDog flapper style which are roughly 2.25”x6”. I have also looked at the FLow-max ping pong ball style which are round and approximately  2.5” in diameter.
The rectangular ones obviously can pass a greater volume of water but have a grear tendency to allow water in when reversing or in a following sea, etc.  I come from an offshore sailing background where bigger scuppers are always better.  The question here is how big is big enough.  Any of your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Kent,
Do you know the dimensions of your skylight? Thanks.

Cannon-Really enjoyed your video!  Some really helpful ideas that I can adapt to my build. Thanks for taking the time to share your experince.
A couple of questions:
1). Who built your fuel tank? I am about to shop around for one.

2). Did you do anything to create fresh air ventilation for the space around the tank, batteries, bilge?

3). Thoughts in a kicker?

Hope you recover quickly?
Cheers,
Ken

Thanks for the thoughtful input guys.  I have been on the fence trying to decide on wether or not foam was worth the bother.  Of course I want my boat to float if it is taking on water but have not been sure I could get enough foam in this boat to actually make it worthwhile. Graham, the designer, has been less then enthusastic about it. He doesn't think a boat this size will have enough to room to make floatation effective. I suppose having  some added floatation, while not enough to keep this boat afloat when completly swamped, would buy some time. I will have a collision chamber forward in either case.  It isn't likely that i can get much floatation up high but can certainty get some in the bilges.

General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / Foam Floatation

Hi Guys- wondering now many of you have added foam, in any form, to your GA's?  Going back and forth on wether it is worth doing on my OB26 build.  The volume of the compartments that would have foam would not provide enough buoyancy to keep the boat from sinking.  I am planning on having a collision bulkhead and chamber forward but am having a hard time seeing the utiltiy in putting foam in the bilge if it won't float the boat.  Almost floating doesn't seem good enough. Any input appreciated.
Cheers,
Ken

General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / Re: Splash Well
« on: July 29, 2017, 09:28:36 PM »
Cannon- thanks for the reply and advice.  I checked out your build pics, very nice!  I am a bit of an interloper on this site.  I am actually building an Outer Banks 26 designed by Graham Byrnes.  It is the first of this design and I don't have a community of builders or the detailing in the plans that Brian includes in his.  I bought a set of GA plans and find them every helpful for "stealing" ideas.
The Outer Banks 26 underbody has a lot of similarities to the GA.
Anyway, thanks for the help.  I am sure I will be back asking for more input from the GA community.
Here are some pics of my build if you have any interest.

General Discussion about the Great Alaskan / Splash Well

Hi Guys,
Any advice on the depth requried for a splash well for a Yamaha or Suzuzki 90.  I know there are a few variables.  Any input appreciated.
