DIY lifepo4 battery
« on: February 01, 2022, 10:31:23 PM »
Anyone out there consider building your own house battery/bank?   It looks like a 20 minute job to build your own battery.  I’m thinking with as much DIY as we put ourselves through it should be a cakewalk.
I have only been studying this for a day or two.  Short story is you can save yourself a 1000$ bucks or two if this is really doable.

I looked into it but opted out.  I am still interested in doing it though. The BMS is most important and a secure battery box.

Good build example:

And a rabbit hole of info from Will Prowse:

I have watched all those videos.  It looks soooo simple.   There are several versions of bms that are available and other than looking at reviews, I bet they are all good enough.  I have also considered a Chinese el-cheapo battery to save money as the build continues.  Ampere time offers some inexpensive options and I seen Will dissect one.  Just no low temp cutoff.

I thought about this and opted out as well. The amount of energy in a battery on a boat 50 miles off the coast scares the heck out of me, so I feel like I am paying for confidence in my storage. Building a battery is the easy part, but how do you gain confidence in your cells and internal components, weld quality, etc? If they are saving you a bunch of money are they really what someone is saying they are? Will Prowse does a bunch of buy and tests, and he is definitely a good source to start into this type of thing, but he is doing it in a garage and not on a boat. I have built a lithium ion battery out of 60 18650 cells (almost a thousand amp hours) that's in a home built skateboard, and I broke a weld on it and almost turned it into a fireball doing 25 miles an hour in traffic. There is just so much that can go wrong with that amount of energy, it just doesn't seem like a great place to save money in my opinion. But, if you do it, definitely post your journey, I would love to see it!

I'm not a battery expert ... but I wonder.  Is this a low-cost way of getting a bank of batteries for off-grid and solar at home?  Sorry for the hijack...

Yep, that gentleman Will Prowse is mainly working to test DIY off grid solutions. He has a ton of good info on that, sounds like maybe you have some homework to do Brian haha...

Todd, here is another good read on the subject. He covers DIY and 'drop in' replacements, etc. I think that article was what started me down the path to purchase kilovault batteries.

As a side note PSA for anyone reading this that popped in my head while thinking about this, people should always remove their metal wedding rings, watch bands, etc while working with this stuff. If you short a house battery with your wedding ring you will almost certainly lose that finger.

Yup.  I just subscribed to his channel.  Our shop is all set up for living in, e.g. plumbing, appliances, power, and we are currently living in it while building the 'big house'.  It's got super-adequate woodstove heat (and propane unit heater backup), so I've been thinking of making it into an off-grid home ... love having backups and in this world, I'm not betting the farm on anything ...

I’m now leaning some toward the SOK marine battery.  It’s not a drop in replacement so it’s smaller. Plus it has what appears to be a 7 year warranty.  I have yet to dissect the SOK warranty.  In my opinion the battleborn warrantee is more of 8 year.  Anyhoo the search continues
