Vhf radio registration
« on: July 16, 2022, 04:32:08 PM »
Sorry if this is in throng place Brian, feel free to move it . I am looking for a quick rundown on how to register my vhf radio so I can use my emergency call button. I am going into Canadian waters next summer and know that is a little more work. Thanks in advance.

I'm way behind reading the forum, but I don't see any replies to it.  I need to get mine registered, also looking for wit, wisdom and keen insights on the topic.

A few years ago I think I got my numbers through BoatUS. I hope I’m remembering that right.

Dennis, what did you end up doing?  Did you just get a second vhf just for Canada?   Is it true that the American and Canadian MMSI don’t cross communicate?

Todd, check out this article on boatus (specifically the registration criteria section) - https://www.boatus.com/products-and-services/membership/mmsi

If you communicate with foreign ports, you need to go through the fcc to get a ship station license. If not, you can get the number for free on the web, should be able to figure out how with a quick google search.

I did end up going through the fcc and getting a ships license which assigned me an MMSI number for my VHF. This is for international water travel. Cost $180

Good deal if you're anywhere near international boundaries ... $180's nothing to worry about.
