After looking around the shop at all the stuff I have that’s ready to be a boat I think I’m just going to Charlie mike.  Too many hours spent to sort of start over.  Plus the addendum is not ready to roll out.
It was pretty cool to make mention of it since a few of us are “right there”.  Maybe the next one will be bigger!

I think it'll be a popular option - many have asked.  :)

C'mon y'all... how about a name for the Big and Wide version?  I keep thinking of "Grizz" or "Grizzly" .... comments?  Ideas?  If I pick your name, I'll hook you up with the new addendum for free :) .  But then again, if I stick with Grizz or Grizzly, I won't!   :o ;D

A classic name "Kodiak" .  I'm going to think on this and maybe add more

'Shelikof'?

I'll put up a poll with all the names in it in about 1-1/2 weeks from now.... :)

Good progress on the big and wide ... Looks like the boat's going to be a full 5" deeper than original, a full 9'2" wide (the 5" deeper more or less says 'no' to the 9' 4" wide version - you won't notice the tiny width difference!), and no problems on length issues.  Need to determine if the building jig needs to be lengthened next - it probably does....

FYI....

As far as I know, this moves the boat into a realm not addressed by any other designer ... not counting slow boats like Devlin produces.

Just a simple rework of the existing design to add more to sides of the boat and maintain the flair would have been a mega hit! This is above and beyond

I do like the "Kodiak". I'll throw in the Aleutian.

Brian:

It should be emphasized that having a beam greater than 8'6" may cause issues with legal road transport, depending on the jurisdiction(s) that one intends to tow in.

Also, I believe Specmar operates out of Oregon, not BC.

Yes, thank you on the Specialty Marine correction - I mentally short-circuited Stephen Pollard (is he retired yet???) of Specmar and John Simpson, naval architect, in British Columbia.  My bad.

Yes ... fully aware of the 8'6" rule on trailering.  The warning is already in the addendum that I'm working on.  Federal interstate law says that you can tow directly from a storage location to the port of entry and back without a Wide Load permit, but all other hauling needs to meet Wide Load requirements (and I would suggest it for the direct-haul route too .. regardless of federal exceptions).  This is precisely why the original Great Alaskan, which is never going away, was designed to be 8' 5" wide, including rubrails (NOT including customer add-ons that may stick out).  That was one of the original design goals.  The big & wide version however, is for those that will keep their boat in a slip or who have no fears of getting and using a Wide Load permit.  Generally the rules are not too bad, and don't require escort vehicles, if you don't exceed 10' wide.  It's a state by state thing though, so you need to check the rules in your own state before committing to this larger version of the Great Alaskan.  (BTW - It looks like "Kodiak King" is in the lead on the naming poll).

Good info!  Thx!

Brian
