Escape hatch for cuddy
« on: December 26, 2019, 10:30:20 PM »
What’s everyone else doing?   I just ordered a couple hatches for the cuddy sole and anchor locker.  The least expensive one I’ve seen so far is around 350$.  I’m going with the Newport style cuddy and would like to keep it low profile

Just make sure you make it big enough to get out of ... for me, a 24" square would be difficult but not impossible.  Anyway, I'll let others respond.  Just my thoughts for what it's worth.

I went with bomar low profile, I believe it was 27x27

Here is a good deal on one:

I went with a Lewmar 44. It is 22x22 and plenty big for me to get out. $384. Very nice hatch.

I guess I’m not missing anything.  Gonna have to bite the bullet and open up my wallet.  24 x 24 would be plenty big.  I might squeeze out of a 20 x 20 in a pinch.

It's a small cost compared to the overall project and safety is worth paying for (and so are leak-proof quality hatches!).

"Aye yi yi!!! "  Made me laugh, at the time I thought it was a good deal since those hatches sell new for 1700.

Bomar and Lewmar size 70 and 77 are high end hatches and the price really jumps when you go up the the 27x27 almost double from the 24"

I see why people opt to build their own. I just searched on ebay for Lewmar 70 and am shocked at the prices and found nothing on the Lewmar 77

It all adds up so quickly

Lewmar 70 hatches have come down in price on defender marine and Lewmar factory outlet.  Just north of 600$
