Hull Numbers
« on: September 28, 2021, 01:03:42 PM »
What are people going to be doing for hull id numbers? Paint? Decal letters? Something else?

I’m not doing anything unless it’s a requirement

I misspoke - I was referring to the registration numbers on either side of the bow...

Gotcha   I think the hardware store stick ons would be lame.  If you know someone has a crickcut pattern cutter thingy I bet you could make a super groovy stencil

Hmm.. that's an interesting idea. I could maybe also just print the number in a stencil font and use a scalpel to cut out a stencil. Are you thinking spray paint with that or using boat paint? I don't think I could make boat paint not run everywhere when I was applying it...

Search around town ... there are usually several places that make stickers that can make outdoor-grade registration letters/numbers.  But I dunno ... there's something classic about using rectangle mailbox stickers .... haha.  Oh yeah, sometimes hardware stores have numbers/letters in various fonts that might look fine too.

Stickers would probably be the easiest if I could find them in a font that I liked... I will take a look around. I was just wondering if my boat would look too ghetto with stickers, I suppose if it did I could just peel them off and paint? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sounds like a trip to the docks are in order.  I’ll be in San Diego day after next a d look for anything I think is cool.  It’s gonna be buggy on the Banks!

You could order online, get them in a couple days and dont have to worry about lining them up or letter spacing.

Pick your font, size, color, shading etc.

Example:

The lining up thing is a big deal ... not all letters/numbers lay on the same line in the same way, and it's hard to guarantee how vertical they turn out.  I like the premade option above....

I just ordered my registration numbers for both sides through rbob's service, it was under $35 for a pair shipped. That service is great, you can design your own basically however you see fit. Looks like it will work very well. Thanks all for the ideas.

Yes HIN numbers are most definitely a requirement. One goes on the starboard high corner on the back of the transom. The other is to be put somewhere only known to the builder incase of theft and the remove the transom HIN number you still have a hidden HIN. This alone could save your boat.
